The Osthaus Hagen Museum in Hagen, directed by Dr Tayfun Belgin, is showing the new series of paintings Von Fernen Umgeben from german artist and TV Comedian Dieter Nuhr. It is a travelling exhibition that will go to the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice from 1 September 2022. Dieter Nuhr himself will travel in advance to help hang his paintings in the beautiful Palazzo.

The artworks have unbelievably large dimensions - the rooms of the already very spacious Museum Osthaus Hagen seem like palace halls with tapestries from floor to ceiling - everything shines in golden, green, violet veils - it's as if you were in a dream.

Dieter Nuhr has travelled all his life and visited over 90 countries. The photos that have been taken have become works of art in digital painting. Although they are data, each work of art exists only once, as the artist affirms.

About his painting, the artist says that an essential part of his artistic work is to become a stranger to himself. In the satirical, the distance enables him to find his own ways of thinking - he uses language to work through analytically and humorously.

Certain perceptions, however, elude analysis and thus also language, and these are expressed in image and sound.

Dieter Nuhr wants to use his lifetime to explore his living space and then add something of his own to it - in summary, this is his artistic concept.

The basis of his artworks are his photographs, which he collected over decades. With Covid 19, travelling became difficult. The artist also confronts the questioning of travel by climate activists and calls travel "essential" and the "basis of a peaceful global coexistence of cultures". He would prefer to develop creative ideas that make travel more ecological.

Digital Painting

The artworks consist of superimposed imagery from different times and places - he cites Cézanne's "harmony parallel to nature" here. The artist wants to work in a progressive way and paints digitally on a tablet - his studio is then always where he is.

The artist is the key of digital painting, the opening of infinite possibilities. In his paintings, he wants to express his amazement in the face of nature and also the refusal to acknowledge our negative zeitgeist, which sees the world not as a miracle but only as an apocalyptic catastrophe.

Painted pictures are also shown in the Osthaus Hagen, for example by people close to him. This came about at the special request of the director, Dr Tayfun Belgin, who wanted to show his visitors a large comprehensive body of work by Dieter Nuhr. In the series of paintings, however, there are no photos of faces, as he considers it aloof to hold a camera in people's faces.

It is important to the artist that his painting is an attempt to stop time in a time when images are moving around the world faster and faster - but the evaluation is left to the viewer - because art is, after all, only a suggestion.

Eine Wanderausstellung im Osthaus Museum Hagen - ein subversiver Versuch die Zeit anzuhalten

Im Osthaus Hagen Museum, geleitet von Dr. Tayfun Belgin, wird die neue Bilderserie von Dieter Nuhr Von Fernen umgeben gezeigt. Es ist eine Wanderausstellung, die ab dem 1. September 2022 in die Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venedig gehen wird, gefördert von der Bros Stiftung. Dieter Nuhr wird selbst im Vorfeld anreisen, um bei der Hängung seiner Bilder in dem wunderschönen Palazzo mitzuwirken.

Die Kunstwerke haben unglaublich grosse Dimensionen - die Räume des ohnehin sehr weitläufigen Museums Osthaus Hagen wirken wie Palasthallen mit Gobelins vom Boden bis zur Decke - alles strahlt in goldenen, grünen, violetten Schleiern- es ist, als befände man sich in einem Traum.

Dieter Nuhr ist seit ganzes Leben lang gereist und hat über 90 Länder besucht. Die Fotos die entstanden sind, sind in digitaler Malerei zu Kunstwerken geworden. Obwohl es sich um Daten handelt, gibt es jedes Kunstwerk nur ein einziges Mal, wie der Künstler versichert.

Über seine Malerei sagt der Künstler, dass ein wesentlicher Teil seiner künstlerischen Arbeit darin besteht, sich fremd zu werden. Im satirischen ermögliche ihm die Distanz, eigene Denkansätze zu finden - er benutze die Sprache, um sich analytisch und humoristisch abzuarbeiten. Bestimmte Wahrnehmungen würden sich aber der Analytik entziehen und somit auch der Sprache und diese werden in Bild und Klang ausgedrückt.

Dieter Nuhr möchte seine Lebenszeit nutzen, um seinen Lebensraum zu erkunden und ihm dann etwas Eigenes hinzuzufügen - dies sei zusammengefasst sein künstlerisches Konzept.

Die Grundlage seiner Kunstwerke sind seine Fotografien, die er über Jahrzehnte sammelte. Mit Covid 19 wurde das Reisen schwierig. Der Künstler stellt sich auch der Infragestellung des Reisens durch Klimaaktivisten und bezeichnet Reisen als „essentiell“ und als „Basis eines friedlichen globalen Miteinanders der Kulturen“. Er würde bevorzugen, kreative Ideen zu entwickeln, die Reisen ökologischer machen.

Digitale Malerei

Die Kunstwerke bestehen aus überlagertem Bildmaterial aus verschiedenen Zeiten und Orten - er zitiert hier Cézannes „Harmonie parallel zur Natur“. Der Künstler möchte fortschrittlich arbeiten und malt digital auf einem Tablet- sein Atelier befindet sich dann immer da, wo er gerade ist.

Für den Künstler ist der Schlüssel von digitalem Malen die Eröffnung unendlicher Möglichkeiten. Er möchte in seinen Bildern sein Staunen im Angesicht der Natur ausdrücken und auch die Weigerung, unseren negativen Zeitgeist anzuerkennen, der die Welt nicht als Wunder, sondern nur noch als apokalyptische Katastrophe begreift.

Im Osthaus Hagen werden auch gemalte Bilder gezeigt, so von Menschen, die ihm nahe stehen. Dies entstand auf besonderen Wunsch des Direktors, Dr. Tayfun Belgin, der seinen Besuchern ein grosses umfassendes Werk von Dieter Nuhr zeigen wollte. In der Gemäldeserie finden sich aber keine Fotos von Gesichtern, da er es für distanzlos hält, Menschen eine Kamera ins Gesicht zu halten.

Dem Künstler ist es wichtig, das sein Bild ein Versuch ist, die Zeit anzuhalten in einer Zeit, in der sich die Bilder immer schneller um die Welt bewegen - aber die Wertung sei dem Betrachter vorbehalten - denn Kunst sei schliesslich nur ein Vorschlag.
