Art Calendar, Düsseldorf, 18 April 2023

Düsseldorf has a new art prize, the K21 Global Art Award. It is to be a new annual art award, to be presented for the first time on 20 April 2023 at the K21 by the Freunde of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. Museum directors and curators from all over the world will travel to Düsseldorf as the nominating jury.

The K21 Global Art Award is intended to honour the vision and courage of artists at the beginning or in the middle of their careers. The intention is to become a programmatic collection extension of the K21's holdings to include significant international voices.

The nominating jury for the award consists of museum directors and curators from around the world

Doryun Chong (M+, Hong Kong), Koyo Kouoh (Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Cape Town), Omar Kholeif (Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE), Oluremi C. Onabanjo (The Museum of Modern Art, New York) and Jochen Volz (Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Brazil). Each jury member nominates two artists from all media. The shortlist of ten names will then be presented to the selection committee of the Friends of the Kunstsammlung, who will nominate the winner. The Friends of the Art Collection have announced their intention to purchase one or more works by the selected artist(s) for a five-figure sum. This year its purchases of the laureate (who has not yet been announced) amount to €70,000.

Freunde der Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen

Since 1969, the Friends of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen have been supporting the museum and, in particular, promoting the expansion of the permanent collection. The acquired artworks will then be handed over to the museum on permanent loan and exhibited in the K21 for one year from 21 April 2023.
