Düsseldorf, 4 August 2022: In the works of James Turrell, light becomes a physically tangible experience. The artist is now showing his installation "Umbra" from the series Shallow Spaces in the Swarovski Crystal Worlds, specifically in the 18th so-called Wunderkammer.

James Turrell is considered one of the most important contemporary artists. The artist, who has already realised an outdoor installation with a Swarovski Optik lens, explains: "The interplay of light and crystal touches me."

According to Swarovski curator Carla Rumler, she has long wanted to own a work of art by James Turrell because his understanding of light is unique "Light breathes life into crystal and ignites a unique magic." James Turrell spoke to the guests at the opening ceremony from his studio in Arizona: "'Umbra' is the light reflected in the soft shadow. In a lunar eclipse, the light softens, it doesn't seem as strong as the direct reflection of light by the moon. It is a soft, fulfilling light that I appreciate very much. When looking at this space, the focus is not on the light surrounding the edge, but on the vastness, the panorama of the very soft light of the reflection in the space."

James Turrell

Turrell grew up in Los Angeles as the son of a Quaker family[1] in strictly religious circumstances. A convinced pacifist, he refused military service and was sentenced to 22 months in prison. He studied psychology and mathematics and began working on "Light Spaces" as early as 1966. In 1968 he received a fellowship at the National Endowment for the Arts and in 1973 completed a degree in art at the Graduate School, Claremont.

One of his best known works is Roden Crater, which he discovered in the 1970s and acquired in 1974. He installed a perceptual art object in the former volcanic crater that runs through the volcano. Different rooms "Skyspaces" carved into the stone react to light, but also to sounds, his aim is to create a synaesthetic architecture of cognition that helps people contemplate their own perception.
