For the first time in the auction's nine-year history, Magnum photographers have invited a diverse group of 'friends', artists, filmmakers and fellow photographers to participate in the final instalment of the three-part curated triptych auction.

So Jim Goldberg invited Judd Apatow, Martin Parr invited Roger Deakins, Susan Meiselas invited Roger Deakins, Greg Halperin invited Todd Hido, and Jim Goldberg invited Larry Sultan as well as Nanna Heitmann invited Hannah Reyes Morales.

Lindokuhle Sobekwa's image of a Johannesburg boy taking a break in the field dreams of the future with his eyes closed. Sabiha Çimen's picture from her award-winning first book of photographs, Hafiz, shows schoolgirls from a girls-only Koranic school at a funfair, an aeroplane above them, so close you feel you can touch it. "We open the doors and invite our long-time friends to come and talk to us," explains Cristina de Middel, the agency's president.

"The invitation is a mere formality, because the photographer family has always had a house together - a house that has a lot going on and is constantly being renovated. As a family, we are now once again looking to the future with more questions than answers."

Vital Signs is the third and final part of the series "Then. Now. Next.", which was organised as part of the agency's 75th anniversary celebrations, which began last May.
