10 July 2022 : QUEER: Stories from the NGV Collection opened on 10 March 2022 and is a groundbreaking exhibition exploring the National Gallery of Victoria's collection through a queer lens. In the process, some previously untold stories came to light, which are celebrated in this exhibition and an accompanying book.
Oppression, Prejudice or Discrimination.
Drawing on contemporary research, interpretation and analysis, the exhibition also explores the stories that have not been visible in the past due to oppression, prejudice or discrimination.
The exhibition spans five gallery spaces and includes around 400 artworks from different eras and regions. It is historically the most comprehensive thematic presentation of artworks dealing with queer histories ever shown in an Australian art institution.
Activism, protest, love, desire, discrimination, loss.
The exhibition is divided into more than ten thematic sections that address a variety of historical and contemporary themes, including activism and protest, love and desire, community and connection, text and performance, discrimination and loss, and more. The works on display span many media including painting, drawing, photography, decorative arts, fashion, textiles, video, sculpture, design and architecture.

Gilbert Baker
The now iconic design was created by Gilbert Baker in 1976, symbolising the power of love and the power of the gay movement. Gilbert Baker was inspired by a moment on a dance floor at the Winterland Ballroom, a former music venue in San Francisco. Baker was also encouraged by Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay politician, who was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, and gay rights activist Cleve Jones. The first two rainbow flags were displayed at United Nations Plaza in San Francisco during the Gay Freedom Day Parade on 25 June 1978.
Baker never trademarked the rainbow flag design because he felt the flag did not belong to any one person. "I don't have a patent or a copyright, so all those dollars slipped away. But [the rainbow flag] belongs to everyone".
Collective ownership of the rainbow flag has exponentially increased the flag's power, transforming it into the most important queer symbol.

Peter Behrens' The Kiss, 1898, known for the androgynous kissing couple at the centre of the Art Nouveau composition, which illuminates the gender ambiguity and fluidity of the late 19th century.

Achilles and Patroclus
The friendship between the Greek warriors Achilles and Patroclus is one of the central stories in Homer's Iliad.
This Chalcidian vase from 540 BC shows a scene of Achilles from the Trojan War. It is known from the Iliad that Achilles had an enslaved woman, Briseis, as a spoil of war and possibly a lover. "I loved her with all my heart, though it was my spear that won her". His most important relationship in the poem, however, is with his childhood friend Patroclus, who is killed by the Trojan prince Hector during the Trojan War. Opinion is divided, but it has been suggested since the early twentieth century that it may have been a sexual liaison.

The Letter by Agnes Goodsir
The painting "The Letter" by the Australian artist Agnes Goodsir was painted in Paris in 1926. It is a document of the revolutionary place of Paris at that time, as well as a document of the love affair between the artist and her partner Rachel Dunn, her lover and muse. Dunn was a constant presence in her work. After meeting in London, the two women moved permanently to Paris in 1921 and settled in the Latin Quarter. Paris in the 1920s was a place of freedom and opportunity for lesbian and bisexual women.
Rachel Dunn made the decision after Agnes Goodsir's death to send many works to Australian galleries as well as to Goodsir's family in Australia. In a letter bequeathed to the National Gallery of Victoria in 1947, she wrote: "the estate should be kept "(...) until things change and they can be exhibited ... or given away to people who will love them." This letter is exhibited regularly and is very popular.

Queen Christina of Sweden
Historians also speculate about the personal identity of Queen Christina of Sweden (r. 1644-1654). She was manly in her behaviour and sometimes in her dress. Beautiful women were attracted to her. She would have disliked "everything women do and say" and declared that "I despise everything that belongs to my sex".
In 1933, the first biography of Queen Christina was published by Margaret Goldsmiths, as well as the Hollywood film "Queen Christina" by Rouben Mamoulian, in which she was, however, portrayed as heterosexual. This was despite the well-known bisexuality of the actress Greta Garbo.
Gay film historian Vito Russo wrote that American society in the 1930s was "obsessed with the perpetuation of gender roles" and described its "absolute horror of queerness".

"Atlantic is a Sea of Bones" is a video work acquired by the NGV by Tourmaline, a transgender woman, artist and activist. The work weaves together the legacies of slavery, HIV/AIDS and racism in the lives of transgender people of colour, as well as the impact of the gentrification of New York City's Meatpacking District and Piers, where marginalised people, and in particular HIV-positive, black and transgender people, formed a community.

The NGV has also launched a five-part podcast series with Courtney Act alongside the exhibition on the exhibition themes of love, community and activism, celebration and memory, queer sensibilities and queer strategies. Artists appearing include Dylan Mooney, Linda Jackson, William Yang, Tourmaline and Frieda Toranzo Jaeger.
Presenter Courtney Act is Australia's leading drag queen. She performs, hosts and also works as an artist.

Leon Löwentraut painting auctioned at the Dorotheum Vienna for the benefit of George Clooney's "Clooney Foundation For Justice". The 24-year-old Leon Löwentraut has already made a name for himself in the international art world, with his art inspiring but also polarising. 8 Juli 2022 : QUEER: Stories from the NGV Collection wurde am 10. März 2022 eröffnet und ist eine bahnbrechende Ausstellung, die die Sammlung der National Gallery of Victoria durch eine queere Linse erforscht. Dabei kamen manche bislang unerzählte Geschichten zutage, die in dieser Ausstellung und einem dazugehörigen Buch zelebriert werden.
Unterdrückung, Vorurteilen oder Diskriminierung
Die Ausstellung stützt sich dabei auf zeitgenössische Forschungen, Interpretationen und Analysen und untersucht auch die Geschichten, die in der Vergangenheit aufgrund von Unterdrückung, Vorurteilen oder Diskriminierung nicht sichtbar waren.

Die Ausstellung erstreckt sich über fünf Galerieräume und umfasst rund 400 Kunstwerke aus verschiedenen Epochen und Regionen. Es handelt sich um die historisch umfangreichste thematische Präsentation von Kunstwerken, die sich mit queeren Geschichten befassen, die jemals in einer australischen Kunstinstitution gezeigt wurde.

Die Ausstellung ist in mehr als zehn thematische Abschnitte gegliedert, die eine Vielzahl historischer und zeitgenössischer Themen behandeln, darunter Aktivismus und Protest, Liebe und Begehren, Gemeinschaft und Verbindung, Text und Performance, Diskriminierung und Verlust und vieles mehr. Die ausgestellten Werke umfassen viele Medien, darunter Malerei, Zeichnung, Fotografie, dekorative Kunst, Mode, Textilien, Video, Skulptur, Design und Architektur.

Das mittlerweile ikonische Design wurde von Gilbert Baker im Jahr 1976 geschaffen, als Symbol für die Kraft der Liebe und die Kraft der Schwulenbewegung. Gilbert Baker wurde von einem Moment auf einer Tanzfläche im Winterland Ballroom, einem ehemaligen Musikveranstaltungsort in San Francisco inspiriert. Ermutigt wurde Baker auch von Harvey Milk, dem ersten offen schwulen Politiker Kaliforniens, der 1977 in den Aufsichtsrat von San Francisco gewählt wurde, und dem Aktivisten für die Rechte der Schwulen, Cleve Jones. Die ersten beiden Regenbogenflaggen wurden auf dem United Nations Plaza in San Francisco während der Gay Freedom Day Parade am 25. Juni 1978 gezeigt.
Baker hat das Design der Regenbogenflagge nie als Markenzeichen schützen lassen, da er der Meinung war, dass die Flagge nicht einer einzelnen Person gehöre. "Ich habe weder ein Patent noch ein Urheberrecht, also sind all diese Dollars weggerutscht. Aber [die Regenbogenflagge] gehört allen“.
Das kollektive Eigentum an der Regenbogenflagge hat die Macht der Flagge exponentiell gesteigert und in das wichtigste queeres Symbol verwandelt.

Die Freundschaft zwischen den griechischen Kriegern Achilles und Patroklos ist eine der zentralen Geschichten in Homers Ilias.
Diese chalkidische Vase aus dem Jahr 540 v. Chr zeigt eine Szene von Achilles aus dem Trojanischen Krieg. Aus der Ilias ist bekannt, dass Achilles eine versklavte Frau, Briseis, als Kriegsbeute und möglicherweise auch Geliebte hatte. "Ich liebte sie von ganzem Herzen, obwohl es mein Speer war, der sie gewann".
Seine wichtigste Beziehung in dem Gedicht ist jedoch die zu seinem Jugendfreund Patroklos, der während des Troja Krieges vom trojanischen Prinzen Hektor getötet wird. Die Meinungen sind geteilt, aber es wird seit dem frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert die Ansicht vertreten, dass es sich um eine sexuelle Verbindung gehandelt haben könnte.

Der Brief von Agnes Goodsir
Das Gemälde „Der Brief“ von der australischen Künstlerin Agnes Goodsir wurde 1926 in Paris gemalt. Es ist ein Dokument des revolutionären Ortes Paris in jener Zeit, als auch ein Dokument der Liebesbeziehung zwischen der Künstlerin und ihrer Lebensgefährtin Rachel Dunn, ihre Geliebten und Muse. Dunn war eine ständige Präsenz in ihren Werken. Nachdem sie sich in London kennengelernt hatten, zogen die beiden Frauen 1921 dauerhaft nach Paris und ließen sich im Quartier Latin nieder. Das Paris der 1920er Jahre war ein Ort der Freiheit und der Möglichkeiten für lesbische und bisexuelle Frauen.
Rachel Dunn traf nach dem Tod von Agnes Goodsir die Entscheidung, viele Werke an australische Galerien sowie an Goodsirs Familie in Australien zu schicken. In einem Brief, der der National Gallery of Victoria 1947 vermacht wurde, schreib sie: „man solle den Nachlass aufbewahren, „(…), bis sich die Dinge ändern und sie ausgestellt werden können ... oder sie an Menschen zu verschenken, die sie lieben werden.“ Dieser Brief wird regelmäßig ausgestellt und ist sehr beliebt.

Königin Christina von Schweden
Historiker spekulieren auch über die persönliche Identität von Königin Christina von Schweden (reg. 1644-1654). Sie sei mannhaft in ihrem Verhalten gewesen und zuweilen auch in ihrer Kleidung. Schöne Frauen seien von ihr angezogen gewesen. Sie hätte Abneigung gegen alles gehabt, „was Frauen tun und sagen" und erklärte, dass "ich alles verachte, was zu meinem Geschlecht gehört“.
Im Jahr 1933 wurde die erste Biografie über Königin Christina von Margaret Goldsmiths veröffentlicht sowie der Hollywood-Film „Queen Christina“ von Rouben Mamoulian gezeigt, in dem sie allerdings heterosexuell dargestellt wurde. Dies trotz der bekannten Bisexualität der Schauspielerin Greta Garbo.
Der schwule Filmhistoriker Vito Russo schreib hierzu, dass die amerikanische Gesellschaft der 1930er Jahre "von der Aufrechterhaltung der Geschlechterrollen" besessen gewesen wäre und beschrieb ihren "absoluten Schrecken vor Queerness“.

„Atlantic is a Sea of Bones“ ist eine von der NGV erworbene Videoarbeit von Tourmaline, einer Transgender-Frau, Künstlerin und Aktivistin.
Die Arbeit verwebt die Hinterlassenschaften von Sklaverei, HIV/AIDS und Rassismus im Leben von farbigen Transgender-Personen sowie die Auswirkungen der Gentrifizierung des Meatpacking District und der Piers von New York City, wo marginalisierte Menschen und insbesondere HIV-positive, schwarze und transsexuelle Menschen eine Gemeinschaft bildeten.
