Düsseldorf, 7 August 2022: Life without the smiley is almost unthinkable today and it has become one of the most important means of communication worldwide. Although Smiley variants have existed since the 1950s, it wasn't until 1970 that French journalist Franklin Loufrani registered it as a trademark and established it around the world through clever collaborations. To celebrate Smiley's 50th birthday, one of the world's finest art book publishers, Assouline, is now releasing a coffee table book in its 2022 Icons collection.

For fifty years, Smiley has been a symbol of hope and positivity, encouraging the world to take the time to smile. The Smiley story began in 1971 when Franklin Loufrani, a French journalist trademarked the Smiley face. On Saturday 1 January 1972, the French newspaper France Soir, printed Loufrani's "Campaign for Good News."

In the decades that followed the trademark registration, Loufrani began to build a brand empire from mere graphic symbols, staying true to his basic philosophy of proclaiming good news. It was only later that he called his brand Smiley and for this he had to buy the name Smiley from numerous trademark owners. In 1996, his son Nicolas Loufrani took over The Smiley Company and built it up into one of the largest 100 licensing companies in the world. It is based on many contracts with the world's leading brands in clothing and gifts. To celebrate this 50th milestone, Smiley and Assouline are now showing a look back at his first 50 years: a compilation of his collaborations, a look back at iconic moments in history.

--------

„What is good news? This is something I’ve been thinking about more than five decades. As its core, good news is a story that makes you smile, inspire ideas and is a call to action. Every day, we are faced with a choice. Will this be the best day of our lives? Or do we fill our minds with negativity and noise, polluting our perspective and blunting our join de vivre?"

Franklin Loufrani
