Unique exhibition: Van Gogh and the Olive Groves

In the spring of 2022, the Van Gogh Museum will host the Olive Groves series of paintings created by Vincent van Gogh during his year-long stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. For the first time, all 15 Olive Tree paintings are on view together in one place.

Van Gogh was fascinated by the ever-changing atmosphere and colors of the olive trees that are so characteristic of the southern French countryside. Van Gogh and the Olive Groves is the first exhibition to explore the importance of olive trees to Van Gogh and what he was trying to achieve with this remarkable series.

The exhibition shows how Van Gogh experimented with different techniques, colors and compositions. He used swirling and rhythmic brushstrokes, worked with bold outlines, stylized shapes, and carefully considered color combinations. This exhibition brings together for the first time all the paintings

Van Gogh produced a total of 15 paintings of olive trees. 3 of them hang in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum, while the rest are scattered around the world.
