Breguet is one of the partners of Art Düsseldorf from April 7 to 9, 2022 and will have its own stand. There, a watchmaker will explain the traditional art of watchmaking and show movements and cases.
What connects Breguet with the world of art
Breguet is among the few manufactures that have set up in-house ateliers for the art of engraving, angling, enameling and guilloché.
The pursuit of aesthetics goes back to the very beginnings of the Maison. Even when the company was founded, founder Abraham-Louis Breguet was concerned with inventing new mechanical elements but he also wanted to achieve a more contemporary style of watchmaking. In the last 25 years of the 18th century, when decorative art had already reached classicism, watches were still stuck in the baroque or even rococo style: bellied cases were overflowing with opulent decorations, hands covered with volutes and arabesques, which seemed cumbersome.
Find out what innovations Abraham-Louis Breguet invented and what are the secrets of beauty and harmony of a Breguet watch here:
DISTINCTIVE BREGUET TRADEMARKS
Breguet hand
Around 1783, Abraham-Louis Breguet designed the slender hands with a slightly openworked "pomme" tip, which were intended to improve the legibility of the dial today known as the "Breguet hand".
Secret signature
Most Breguet watch dials have a secret signature, usually engraved with a drypoint on either side of the 12, which used to be a guarantee of authenticity.
Unique number
Each Breguet watch is given a uniquely assigned number, which is recorded in the Maison's registers, which have been kept without interruption since the end of the 18th century.
Guilloché gold dials
As early as 1786, different guilloché patterns make for particularly legible dials, something that was very close to Abraham-Louis Breguet's heart. Today, gold and sometimes mother-of-pearl dials still produce the extremely complex and refined motifs that are guilloched in the traditional manner by the Maison's craftsmen.
Breguet numerals
At the end of the 18th century, Abraham-Louis Breguet designed delicate and elegant Arabic numerals. The "Breguet numerals" broke the rules of watchmaking at the time and are still part of the world of horlogerie today.
Lugs
For more stability, the lugs are welded to the case and the bars are screwed.
Flute doors
On the case exterior, the fluted doors are quintessential Breguet. The vertical grooves are typical of Breguet cases and are created in the traditional cold process before being finished by hand.

THE BREGUET WATCHES OF THE BONAPARTE FAMILY
Born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, A.-Louis Breguet (1747-1823) spent most of his life in Paris, rich in important watch inventions. Here he worked simultaneously in all horological fields and began his career with a series of masterpieces. Breguet does his watchmaking apprenticeship in Versailles and is soon discovered by the Versailles court. Queen Marie Antoinette gave Breguet a commission for a pocket watch in 1783. It was to be the most complicated pocket watch ever created for Marie Antoinette, but unfortunately it was not completed until after her death in 1844. Highly appreciated by King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette, Breguet watches feature original movements and cylinder or lever escapements that have been perfected time and time again.
