The illustrated encyclopedia of tree species is now available in a Gold Edition from TASCHEN. 

Between 1888 and 1913, Romeyn Beck Hough published American Woods, which originally contained 14 volumes of real veneer patterns mounted on plates-a work that set the standard for the study of trees and wood species.

The Woodbook reproduced in facsimile shows the patterns of all the species listed in the original volumes; for this purpose, TASCHEN received one of the rare original volumes in very good condition with only minimal damage to the woodcuts. Each of the trees, arranged alphabetically, is represented by three cross-sections (radial, horizontal, and tangential) that highlight the distinctive features of the grain as well as the richness of color and texture among the many different species.

In addition, this Special Edition includes lithographs by Charles Sprague Sargent depicting the leaves and nuts of most of the trees, as well as brief texts describing the geographic origins of the trees, their external characteristics, and their uses.

The author

Klaus Ulrich Leistikow (1929-2002) studied natural sciences and philosophy in Cologne, Tübingen, and Glasgow and taught biology at the University of Frankfurt am Main. From 1986 to 1989 he was director of the Botanical Institute and Botanical Garden in Frankfurt am Main. In 1988 he was appointed chairman of the Palmengarten Society.
