For many people, carnival is one of the best days of the year. While everything is over in Germany on Ash Wednesday, the carnival in Basel is just getting started. The Basel carnival is the biggest in Switzerland and also the most important Protestant carnival in the world. The oldest document about the Basel carnival dates back to 1376 and can be traced back to Celtic and Germanic origins, ancestor worship, winter festivals and fertility rituals and Lent. When the Reformation began to restrict the festivities, the Basel carnival developed into a resistance movement.
