Düsseldorf, 28 October 2022: Turin's Mazzoleni Gallery will host the third and final stage of the exhibition series celebrating Oliviero Toscani's 80th birthday. The legendary photographer has curated his own exhibition and will show a selection of his best-known images, photographs from the Grande Cretto work by Alberto Burri in Gibellina to Razza Umana, the largest existing archive of human morphological differences.

Oliviero Toscani is internationally known as the creative force behind the world's most famous brands, creator of images that have changed the history of communication. His campaigns have brought the issue of social responsibility into the mainstream. Toscani tackled racism, inequality and abuse with provocation and boundary crossing. These include the Jesus Jeans poster 'Who Loves Me Follow Me', the 'Kiss between Priest and Nun' from 1992 and the poster 'Three Hearts White / Black / Yellow' from 1996.

A walk through the exhibition: Grande Cretto by Alberto Burri in Gibellina

A separate section at Mazzoleni will focus on the series Grande Cretto by Alberto Burri in Gibellina, which Toscani photographed for the Louis Vuitton Fashion Eye project. It is a collection of photo albums created by Maison Louis Vuitton with ten of the world's most famous photographers. Each of them was invited to photograph a city of their choice for a series dedicated to travel. Toscani chose Gibellina, the Sicilian town destroyed by the 1968 Belice earthquake. Alberto Burri poured hundreds of tons of cement on the city's rubble in 1981, creating one of the most important works of European Land Art. These photographs were printed on monumental concrete panels and interact with some of Alberto Burri's cretti.

Razza Umana - over 10,000 portraits

In the ten-year Razza Umana project, Oliviero Toscani travelled the world photographing people to create the largest existing archive of humanity's morphological differences, with over 10,000 portraits.
