Düsseldorf. 4 September 2022: Dieter Nuhr's travelling exhibition has stopped in Venice. Now you can see photos from the exclusive opening. Parallel to the 79th International Film Festival and the 59th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia - his works will be shown at the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in its Sale Monumentali, directly on St Mark's Square in Venice.

In a solo exhibition entitled "Dieter Nuhr - Circondato di Lontano" (in German: Von Fernen umgeben), sponsored by the Brost Foundation, Nuhr's works are set in dialogue with wall and ceiling paintings by the world-famous Renaissance artists Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese. Alethea Magazine shows exclusive photos of this special travelling exhibition, which was previously on show at Osthaus Hagen.

Dieter Nuhr comments on his exhibition as follows: "Here in this exhibition space of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, I find myself and my work in very good hands. It is a dream for an artist to be able to show his paintings in the context of the great masters of the Renaissance - Veronese, Titian and Tintoretto." He adds, "The exhibition here is a great event for me." Dirk Geuer, Association for Art in Public Dirk Geuer emphasises, "Putting contemporary art in dialogue with old masters is, for me, a very special attraction. To be able to organise exhibitions in the famous Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana is a great honour for me, but also a challenge."

Born in Wesel/Germany in 1960, Dieter Nuhr is one of Germany's most successful satirists, but his work as a visual artist has lasted even longer. From 1981 to 1987 he studied art at the University of Essen, the former Folkwang School. Today, his paintings deal with the themes of strangeness and familiarity, distance and proximity. While he still painted with oils in the 1990s and later switched to photography, today he combines painterly and photographic elements on a tablet. In doing so, he programmes digital brushes that overlay the original photography, mostly landscape or architectural shots, in several layers of colour.

In Nuhr's works, the photographed is reconstructed in a painterly process. In the end, painterly-looking compositions emerge that are more like paintings. The artist finds the motifs on his travels around the world. He has already been to almost a hundred countries.

On display are partly large-format pictures with motifs from Ethiopia, Brazil, India, Mexico, Nepal, Peru as well as motifs from Germany. The Ruhr region, where Nuhr was born and grew up, plays a major role. The industrial architecture typical of this region is reflected in his pictorial compositions.

For the first time, sketches created especially for the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana will also be on display, taking up themes such as Paolo Veronese's famous murals from the Marciana showing Plato and Aristotle.
