Exhibition highlight at the Ruhr Museum, Zeche Zollverein. A moving performance by the Ruhr Kohle Choir at the opening: Glück Auf!

Art Calendar, 7 May 2023: Yesterday evening the wonderful exhibition Mythos & Moderne. Fußball im Ruhrgebiet (Myth & Modernity. Football in the Ruhr Area) was opened at the Ruhr Museum at Zeche Zollverein. The exhibition is the first special photographic exhibition on the history of Ruhr football. More than 450 football motifs from the Ruhr Museum's photo archive, some of which have never been shown before, as well as the famous Dortmund picture by Andreas Gursky and photographs by photography legend Roland Wirtz. The Ruhr Coal Choir sang at the opening ceremony. The choir was founded with the aim of cultivating mining songs and preserving mining culture. Hundreds of guests came and were deeply moved.

"Football is worked here."

Football in the Ruhr is the story of a working-class sport. The originally bourgeois-elitist sport became a mass event after the First World War and the coal mines also provided pitches for miners to play football on their premises. As Franz Beckenbauer put it: "The heart of football beats in the Ruhr region".

Manuel Neukirchner, Director of the German Football Museum: "Science, culture, technology and innovations are the great drivers and perspective providers for a region that - as is also impressively documented in our photo exhibition - has transformed and redefined itself over the past decades. Football as a source of identity has become a reliable constant. It is there for the people, especially in the Ruhr conurbation with its diverse forms of cultural exchange, with its approximately five million people from 170 nations."

The exhibition

The two epochs of myth and modernity are presented and contrasted in eleven themes:

Lebensgefühl, Auf dem Platz, Revierderbys, Triumphe und Tragödien, Legends und Idole, Orte des Geschehens, Stadionbesuch, Auf Asche, Am Spielfeldrand, Solidarität und Kommerzialisierung.

In a side cabinet, the German Football Museum also shows highlight exhibits on the subject from its permanent exhibition, including Helmut Rahn's original jersey from the 1954 World Cup final.

Zeche Zollverein

The Zeche Zollverein was an active coal mine in Essen from 1851 to 1986. Today it is an architectural and industrial monument and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Zollverein is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Culture and the location of various cultural institutions as well as the Folkwang University of the Arts.
