Düsseldorf, 13 September 2022: Mark Cousins, the Irish-Scottish director and writer is showing an immersive installation at the Fruitmarket in Edinburgh, centre of cultural life. "Like A Huge Scotland" tells the story of the day of great inspiration in the life of Scottish artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912-2004) in a surround sound visual experience. The exhibition runs from 5 to 27 November in the Warehouse gallery space.

Background

In 1949, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham hiked with friends to the Grindelwald Glacier in Switzerland. As she made her way through the frozen ice, she had an epiphany and later created a cycle of paintings. More than 70 years after Barns-Graham, Mark Cousins climbed the same glacier and filmed it almost disappearing. "Like A Huge Scotland" is an angry elegy to a glacier that has disappeared due to global warming, and a passionate tribute to the artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. The installation, Like A Huge Scotland, magnifies details of Barns-Graham's glacier paintings 10,000 times to reveal their almost molecular structure. Mark Cousins will be joined by musicians Linda Buckley at the Fruitmarket and aims to show visitors what inspiration feels like and what happened to Barns-Graham on the day. Rob Airey, Director of the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, said, "Visiting the Grindelwald Glacier in 1949 had a huge impact on Willie's artistic practice, and the changes the glacier has undergone since then due to climate change are likely to have an equally profound effect on us all."

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham was born in St Andrews on 8 June 1912. She attended Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1937. At the suggestion of the college headmaster Hubert Wellington, she moved to St Ives in 1940 and joined the developing art community there. After her trip to the Grindelwald Glacier in Switzerland in 1949, her work attracted the attention of many important contemporary critics, curators and collectors. In 1960 Barns-Graham inherited a family home near St Andrews and divided her time between the two coastal communities. She exhibited throughout her career. The monograph dedicated to her work - Lynne Green's 'W. Barns-Graham: a studio life' by Lynne Green confirmed her as an important representative of the St Ives School and a major British modernist artist. In 2001 she was made a CBE and awarded four honorary doctorates. Her works are in all the major public collections in the UK. She died in St Andrews on 26 January 2004, having established the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust to manage her artistic and charitable legacy.
