Düsseldorf, 1.9. 2022: The Wertgigant, art object by HA Schult, makes a stop in Vienna at Karlsplatz, and can be seen there from 27 September. The sculpture, which weighs over 1 tonne, is a projection screen that symbolises the electronic waste that German households produce in 72 seconds.

The German insurance company Wertgarantie developed a study with the result: German households produce 436,548 tons of electronic waste annually by not having defective appliances repaired but by disposing of them. The study also shows that about half of all appliances are defective within the first ten years. 78 percent of those surveyed then decide against repairing them, even if this would be possible. 84 percent then dispose of the broken appliance - which leads to large amounts of electronic waste. Theoretically, this creates an army of 1,000 value giants each time within 20 hours - comparable to the 1,000 Trash People, the rubbish people of the artist HA Schult.

Why do the majority of consumers decide against repairing defective appliances? One in three said that the repair costs were too high, 43 percent said that new purchases were the reason for not repairing an appliance. (Source Wertgarantie).

(Quelle Wertgarantie).

Der Krieg

28 October 1994, HA Schult staged this action in St. Petersburg - ©HA Schult

HA Schult has been on a mission to protect the environment for over 50 years. He is the first signatory of the „Offenen Briefs an Kanzler Olaf Scholz“ (Open Letter to Chancellor Olaf Scholz) of 29 April 2022, opposing arms deliveries to Ukraine out of concern for a Third World War in the context of the Ukraine conflict.

War

On 28 October 1994, HA Schult staged an action dedicated to peace on Schlossplatz in St. Petersburg. In the city, which had been besieged and starved for years during the Second World War, point two tanks ripped apart the words "The War". The letters, between six and eight metres high, were strung together with illuminated chains. The war machine hired by the Russian army was painted in white, the other in black, according to the principle of good and evil. HA Schult: "By tearing apart the German word DER KRIEG on historical Russian soil, a call is made worldwide, in the language of art, for new thinking in economics, culture and politics."  (source HA Schult museum)
