Verrate nicht Deine Seele.“ 600 Entscheider aus Wirtschaft und Politik darunter Umweltaktivisten der ersten Stunde wie HA Schult und der frühere Bundesumweltminister Klaus Töpfer. Der Auftritt zeigt aber auch, welche Rolle Künstlern zukommt. Sie gehören nicht zu den Entscheidungsträgern, aber ihre Kunst hat die Kraft, Menschen zu emotionalisieren, wie es an diesem Abend geschah.

Düsseldorf, 19. November 2022: Die Trash People waren endlich wieder einmal zu sehen. Sie machten gestern Halt in Wuppertal beim Circular Valley Forum, der ersten großen Veranstaltung der von der NRW Regierung gestützten Initiative, die den Rhein-Ruhr Kreis zum weltweiten Zentrum für Kreislaufwirtschaft machen möchte. Der Ort war sehr gut gewählt, denn dort trafen gestern über 600 Top Entscheider zusammen, darunter CEOs und Vorstände von DAX-Unternehmen und Mittelständler, wie BASF, Bayer, Evonik, Vorwerk, Haniel, Grüner Punkt, Forschungseinrichtungen, wie Fraunhofer Umsicht, Max-Planck-Institut, Wuppertal Institut und Politik, u. a. Umweltminister Oliver Krischer, NRW-Wirtschaftsministerin Mona Neubaur, Wuppertals Oberbürgermeister Uwe Schneidewind, Nathanael Liminski, Minister für Bundes- und Europaangelegenheiten, sowie der frühere Bundesumweltminister Klaus Töpfer, vom Forum als „Vater der Kreislaufwirtschaft“ bezeichnet.

Mit unterwegs waren auch der Düsseldorfer Fotograf Ansgar Maria van Treeck und seine Frau, die die Stationen der Kunstwerke von HA Schult rund um die Welt schon lange begleiten. Von ihnen stammen viele der nunmehr historischen Fotos, wie z. B. die Dokumentation der Trash People in Matera; Kunstfotos, die in der Kunstwelt hoch gehandelt werden. Es kommt auf den einen Moment an, an dem die Trash People beisammen stehen und den der Fotograf verewigt.

Location

Die Stadthalle von Wuppertal ist eine der größten Attraktionen von Wuppertal, ein Neorenaissance Palast italienischer Prägung. Die Trash People waren im gesamten Gebäude aufgestellt. Sie waren vor der Türe platziert und in der Empfangshalle. Am eindrucksvollsten waren sie im 1000 qm großen Saal, der früher als einer der bedeutendsten Konzerthäuser Europas galt. Sie standen auf der Balustrade und wirkten wie ein Mahnmal.

Ihre Inszenierung in der Historischen Stadthalle fügt Wuppertal damit in eine Reihe namhafter Orte. HA Schult hatte die lebensgroßen Figuren aus Abfällen bereits an den Pyramiden von Gizah, auf der Chinesischen Mauer, auf dem Roten Platz in Moskau und in der Arktis aufgestellt. Neben der Trash People gibt es auch den Wertgiganten, der die Menge an Elektroschrott symbolisiert, den deutsche Haushalte alle 72 Sekunden produzieren.

In seiner Rede ermahnte HA Schult, der seinen Umweltaktivismus 50 Jahre vor den meisten Teilnehmern begann, mit eindeutigen Botschaften: „Wenn wir die Welt nicht verändern, wird sie uns verändern“. Mit Blick auf Materialien und Rohstoffe: „Prüfe das Ding, das Du wegwerfen willst und verrate es nicht. Es ist der Spiegel deiner selbst. Verrate nicht Deine Seele.“

Zum Circular Valley, die Initiative, die die Rhein-Ruhr-Region zum globalen Hotspot der Kreislaufwirtschaft machen möchte, sagte der Künstler: „Circular Valley, die von Wuppertal in die Welt aufbrechende Brutstätte frischen Denkens, zeigt uns neue Positionen im Umgang mit der Bewahrung unseres Planeten. Jenen Planeten, den wir nur geleast haben und dabei sind, ihn zum "Trash Planet Earth" zu machen.“

Die Teilnehmer waren überrascht von den Trash People, denn viele hatten die Kunstwerke noch nie aus der Nähe gesehen. Der Auftritt zeigt aber auch, welche Rolle Künstlern zukommt. Sie gehören nicht zu den Entscheidungsträgern, aber ihre Kunst kann die Kraft haben, Menschen zu emotionalisieren, wie es an diesem Abend geschah.

Der Einladung waren viele Top Entscheider gefolgt. NRW-Wirtschaftsministerin Mona Neubaur sagte in ihrer Rede: „Sie sind Team Zuversicht, Sie sind Team Mut“. Angesichts der gegenwärtigen Krisen sei es entscheidend, von der linearen Wirtschaftsweise der Wegwerfgesellschaft zu einer echten Kreislaufwirtschaft zu gelangen. Und für diese Herausforderung sei das Circular Valley „genau die richtige Antwort“.

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt verriet Alethea Magazine in einem exklusiven Interview, dass die Vorbereitungen für ein Accelerator-Programm laufen für internationale Startups, mit dem Thema „Giga-Impact“; Lösungen, die Emissionen im Giga-Tonnen-Bereich reduzieren können.

The performance also shows the role of artists. They are not among the decision-makers, but art has the power to unite and emotionalise people, as it did on this evening.

Düsseldorf, 19 November 2022: The Trash People was finally on show again. It stopped in Wuppertal yesterday at the Circular Valley Forum, the first major event of the NRW government-backed initiative to make the Rhine-Ruhr district the global centre for the circular economy. The location was very well chosen, as more than 600 top decision-makers met there yesterday, including CEOs and board members of DAX companies and medium-sized enterprises, including BASF, Bayer, Evonik, Vorwerk, Haniel, Grüner Punkt, research institutions such as Fraunhofer Umsicht, Max Planck Institute, Wuppertal Institute) and politicians (including Environment Minister Oliver Krüger). including Environment Minister Oliver Krischer, NRW Economics Minister Mona Neubaur, Wuppertal's Lord Mayor Uwe Schneidewind, Nathanael Liminski, Minister for Federal and European Affairs, and former Federal Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer, described by the Forum as the "father of the circular economy."

Also on the road were the Düsseldorf photographer Ansgar Maria van Treeck and his wife, who have long accompanied the stations of HA Schult's artworks around the world. Many of the now historic photos, such as the documentation of the Trash People in Matera, come from them; art photos that are highly traded in the art world. It's all about that one moment when the Trash People are together and the photographer immortalises it.

Location

The Stadthalle in Wuppertal is one of Wuppertal's biggest attractions, a neo-Renaissance palace of Italian influence. The Trash People were stationed throughout the building. They were placed in front of the door and in the reception hall. They were most impressive in the 1000 square metre hall, once considered one of the most important concert halls in Europe. They stood on the balustrade and looked like a memorial.

Their staging in the Historische Stadthalle thus places Wuppertal among a number of renowned venues. HA Schult had already set up the life-size figures made of waste at the pyramids of Gizah, on the Great Wall of China, on Red Square in Moscow and in the Arctic. In addition to the Trash People, there is also the Wertgigant (Value Giant), which symbolises the amount of electronic waste that German households produce every 72 seconds.

In his speech, HA Schult, who started his environmental activism 50 years before most of the participants, admonished with clear messages: "If we don't change the world, it will change us". With regard to materials and raw materials: "Check the thing you want to throw away and don't give it away. It is the mirror of yourself. Don't betray your soul."

Regarding Circular Valley, the initiative that aims to make the Rhine-Ruhr region a global hotspot for the circular economy, the artist said: "Circular Valley, the hotbed of fresh thinking setting out from Wuppertal into the world, shows us new positions in dealing with the preservation of our planet. That planet we have only leased and are in the process of turning into Trash Planet Earth."

The participants were surprised by the Trash People, as many had never seen the artworks up close. But the performance also shows the role artists have to play. They are not among the decision makers, but their art can have the power to emotionalise people, as it did on this evening.

Many top decision-makers accepted the invitation. NRW Economic Affairs Minister Mona Neubaur, who is currently facing enormous challenges, said in her speech: "You are Team Confidence, you are Team Courage". In view of the current crises, she said, it is crucial to move from the linear economy of the throwaway society to a true circular economy. And for this challenge, the Circular Valley is "exactly the right answer".

Where do we go from here?

Dr Carsten Gerhardt revealed to Alethea Magazine in an exclusive interview that preparations are underway for an accelerator programme for international start-ups, with the theme "Giga-Impact"; solutions that can reduce emissions in the giga-tonne range.
