The renowned Düsseldorf Philara Collection presents the first solo exhibition of Argentine artist Mercedes Azpilicueta in Germany. The artist allows queer, feminist or marginalised figures to have their say and dedicates her new exhibition to the work of Artemisia Gentileschi.

Düsseldorf: Die renommierte Sammlung Philara zeigt die erste Einzelausstellung der argentinischen Künstlerin Mercedes Azpilicueta (*1981 in La Plata), Susurros Barrocos, in Deutschland. In ihrer multidisziplinären Arbeit läßt sie queere, feministische oder marginalisierte Figuren zu Wort kommen. Ihre Inspiration findet Mercedes Azpilicueta in lateinamerikanischer Literatur, zeitgenössischer Populärkultur und barocker Kunstgeschichte, wie für diese Ausstellung anhand der Bilder von Artemisia Gentileschi. Es handelt sich um eine Nacherzählung vom „Nonnen-Leutnant“, welche*r im 17. Jahrhundert lebte. Azpilicueta rekonstruiert in ihren Kunstwerken die Vergangenheit und verbindet die Werke mit queerem Nachtleben, Bondage-Kultur und anderen Aspekten, die sich mit der Geschlechtsidentität und den dem Körper auferlegten Zwängen befassen.

Mercedes Azpilicueta studierte an der Universidad de las Artes, Buenos Aires, an der Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, Buenos Aires, am Dutch Art Institute/ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Arnhem und an der Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. Seit 2021 ist sie Leiterin des Textildepartements und -programms TXT an der Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

Düsseldorf: The renowned Philara Collection presents the first solo exhibition of the Argentine artist Mercedes Azpilicueta (*1981 in La Plata), Susurros Barrocos, in Germany. In her multidisciplinary work, she lets queer, feminist or marginalised figures have their say. Mercedes Azpilicueta finds her inspiration in Latin American literature, contemporary popular culture and baroque art history, as for this exhibition through the paintings of Artemisia Gentileschi. It is a retelling of the "nun-lieutenant" who lived in the 17th century. Azpilicueta reconstructs the past in her artworks and connects the works with queer nightlife, bondage culture and other aspects that deal with gender identity and the constraints imposed on the body.

Mercedes Azpilicueta studied at the Universidad de las Artes, Buenos Aires, the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, Buenos Aires, the Dutch Art Institute/ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Arnhem and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. Since 2021 she is head of the textile department and programme TXT at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.
