UnboxingValentino F/S23, Paris, 2 October 22 - Restraint, minimization, but also rebellion, from Zendaya to Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz-Beckham

#UnboxingValentino S/S 23 at Carreau du Temple in Le Marais, Paris.

Restraint, minimization, but also rebellion.

And all new handbag models.

The most beautiful gesture was probably Pierpalolo Piccioli escorting his models outside the door after the show. Despite the rain, the models presented the collection to the waiting spectators and walked around the Temple. Credits: Courtesy of Valentino

October 2, 2022: Pierpaolo Piccioli invited to the Carreau du Temple in Le Marais for the presentation of #UnboxingValentino, Spring/Summer 2023. The show started almost an hour late; maybe because he was still waiting for Valentino muse Zendaya, who arrived with limousine escort accompanied by her stylist, Law Roach. With her stunning charm, she first greeted the waiting audience when she met Naomi Campbell, also dressed in black. Zendaya's outfit was to preview the unboxing collection. A glittery tulle catsuit and oversized blazer, she was dressed head to toe in Valentino Toile Iconographe.

At the Carreau du Temple, black benches were set up, with black invitation cards where guests sat very close to each other. Among them: Brooklyn Beckham and his wife Nicola Peltz-Beckham, who attended the Paris premiere of his mother Victoria Beckham's collection. As well as Dove Cameron, Ashley Park of Emily in Paris, Simone Ashley of The Bridgertons, Florence Pugh, Leonie Hanne, Jenna Ortega (aka Wednesday Addams), Madelaine Petsch and a host of influencers. Nicola Peltz-Beckham, Brooklyn Beckham and Dove Cameron were dressed in Valentino nude and earth tones, obviously already the new Valentino collection.

Other guests and many influencers were dressed in Valentino's Pink PP, the color developed by Pierpaolo Piccioli together with the Pantone Institute, which has since dominated Maison Valentino's 2022. The chief designer is currently planning a Pink PP event and party series around the world, and has appointed Zendaya and Sir Lewis Hamilton as Pink PP ambassadors. Even the boutique in Paris was all dressed up in pink, like a Christo work of art.

On the subject of Unboxing

Why did Pierpaolo Piccioli use the term Unboxing as the theme for his fashion show? It's a term from net culture that refers to unwrapping a gift and commenting on it. Think of the lucky ones who were able to unbox their pink Valentino outfit for the show.

Fashion

However, there was nothing of the PP Pink on the runway. Pierpaolo Piccioli showed a collection that was meant to show both the disillusionment and insecurity of the times in which the younger generation is growing up. But also the spirit of rebellion, as a voice-over by artist Erykah Badu reminded us at the beginning of the show. Pierpaolo Piccioli explains his idea as follows: "Unboxing an image means unboxing an idea. Get rid of the structure and you will see whats's inside".

The predominant colors were nude and brown, interrupted by occasional color highlights, such as bright blue, green, red and yellow. Brown is making its fashion comeback for the first time since the 90s. Brown stands for stability and down-to-earthness. Was the simple collection a sobering after the spectacular outfits of the Pink PP collection in Paris in March and The Beginning Haute Couture FW 22/23 presented on the Spanish Steps in Rome in July?

No, because the collection was radically pared down, minimalist elegant yet feminine, Valentino's trademark. Pierpaolo Piccioli's fashion fits perfectly with the spirit of the times. In PP's words: "Purity is reduction, not absence. Those empty spaces are not lack of content. They declare personal choices. In those omissions, in those allusions, lays the depth of identity. Cuts and transparencies reveal the persona."

Valentino fans can look forward to new handbag declinations. Valentino has developed new models, with the Valentino Toile Iconographe and the Stud symbol, a tribute to Roman columns. On display are all forms of handbag shapes in iPhone size to the shopping bag designed for men. The bags are in black, brown and nude tones, embellished with sequins or feathers.

Get rid of the structure and you will see whats’s inside“
