Düsseldorf, September 30: Parallel to the 59th Biennale di Venezia, Austrian artist Erwin Wurm is exhibiting at the Sale Monumentali of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana directly on St. Mark's Square in Venice. Erwin Wurm, born in 1954 in Bruck an der Mur in Styria, is a very well-known international representative of Austrian contemporary art. His oeuvre ranges from material sculpture to action art, video, photography and drawing. He became known for his sculptures fat sculptures, which show petty bourgeois status symbols such as cars, refrigerators or family homes in a "greased" state.

In the exhibition Avatars in Venice Erwin Wurm shows the group of works Skins. Unlike his Fat works, these works are about a reduction of volume. In the sculptures, which are up to 4 meters high, bodies clad in jeans, shirts and sneakers are reproduced. Erwin Wurm: "Two-dimensionality, three-dimensionality, mass, skin, surface, volume; all these are important components of my research on sculpture. Squeezed and flattened or reduced to a very thin form, my new works acquire a certain fragility that I like: they become almost abstract." The exhibition is curated by Manfred Möller and sponsored and organized by the Association for Art in Public Dirk Geuer.
