Art Calendar, 20 November 2022

Art Cologne came to an end today. Hall 11 was well prepared, with a new hall layout, wide plazas, coloured floor stripes and security. It was questionable how the results would turn out in view of the energy crisis and the Ukraine war. Read on if you are interested in numbers:

Düsseldorf, 20 November 2022: Art Cologne 2022 ended today and announced its first results. It was questionable how the financial results would turn out in view of postponements, competition with other fairs, but above all because of the energy crisis and the Ukraine war. Daniel Hug, head of the fair, had expressed optimism to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger in the run-up, saying that hip art was still in demand, even with waiting lists, and against this background the current crisis should have no effect on the fair. It seems to have proved true.

Since 2007, Art Cologne had always taken place in spring, but because of Corona it was scheduled for autumn and merged with Cologne Fine Art. On the last day, there was a huge crowd and a long queue in front of the entrance as thousands of visitors once again streamed into the fairgrounds for the closing. Due to increased security measures, there had been a traffic jam. The fears that climate activists would destroy pictures, most of which were not under glass, had fortunately not come true.

The fair was well prepared and so the hall layout had larger plazas to linger in and a coloured floor strip guided the visitors. According to Daniel Hug, around 43,000 people visited the fair to see the curated range of contemporary works, classical modern and post-war German art.

The gallerists:

Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery (Salzburg/Paris/London) appreciates Art Cologne as a reception for its clients from the Rhineland. "Well attended, good people", is the conclusion of Galerie van Horn (Düsseldorf). Gallery owner Daniela Steinfeld thinks the autumn date is much better. "German Expressionists are the rage," Laszlo von Vertes noted, "we had great demand and made considerable sales." Vertes was very pleased with the media interest his stand received because of the paintings by Claude Monet and Gerhard Richter. "Despite the crises, there is a great demand for art, which is, after all, a sound investment," Vertes stated. Manuel Ludorff from the Düsseldorf gallery of the same name said that this year was "extremely lively": "People like to come, and the autumn date of the fair is a gift".

Galerie East from Strasbourg found a buyer for a tapestry by Roy Lichtenstein for 120,000 euros. "For us, participating was a good experience, we met many interesting people," gallery owner Steven Riff reported.

HA Schult's Trash People at the Circular Valley Forum in Wuppertal on 18 November 2022."Check the thing you want to throw away and don't give it away. It is the mirror of yourself. Don't betray your soul." 600 decision-makers from business and politics came together, including environmental activists from the early days such as HA Schult and former Federal Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer, described by the Forum as the "father of the circular economy". The participants were surprised by the Trash People, many of whom had never seen the artworks up close before. But the performance also shows what role artists play. They are not among the decision-makers, but art has the power to unite and emotionalise people, as it did on this evening.
